Feral hogs are an invasive species. Their ever-growing population costs an estimated 58 million annually in damages to the agricultural industry. From crop damage to spreading disease, feral hogs are responsible for the majority of illness passed to humans across the country.
Their reproductive is comparable to that of rats, having up the three litters a year and each litter averaging 6-15 piglets. All means and methods of keeping an out of control population in check are being deployed across the country. Trapping, day and night hunting, poison, helicopter hunting and more are means and methods required to take a minimum of 70% of the population just to maintain the current estimated population of an estimated 6 million hogs in Texas lone. With no natural predators, human intervention and efforts are necessary to maintain our way of life in the agriculture industry.
They are also a threat to the snake population in South Texas - primarily rattlesnakes. Normally when a hunter or a hiker is traveling near a rattlesnake they can hear the warning of the rattlesnake's tail. But, the predatory hog population has taught the snakes not to rattle their tail. This has caused significantly more snake bites in the past few years in Texas.
People have also been killed by feral hogs.
Here in Texas, we recognize that the population is at an unmanageable level so bad that the state of Texas removed requirements in 2019 to have a hunting license to shoot a hog.
With that being said, we are using this opportunity as a fundraiser for counter trafficking operations as well as spreading the message of our efforts.
"Wild hogs are among the most destructive invasive species in the United States today. Two million to six million of the animals are wreaking havoc in at least 39 states and four Canadian provinces; half are in Texas, where they do some $400 million in damages annually. They tear up recreational areas, occasionally even terrorizing tourists in state and national parks, and squeeze out other wildlife."
